6.7   Hazardous Chemicals

Owners and operators of tanks used for the storage of hazardous chemicals also have to comply with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration requirements 1910.119 - “Process Safety Management of Highly Hazardous Chemicals.”

The requirements of 1910.119 are for the purpose of “...preventing or minimizing the consequences of catastrophic releases of toxic, reactive, flammable, or explosive chemicals. These releases may result in toxic, fire or explosion hazards.”

A discussion of these requirements is beyond the scope of this training course. Additional information and guidance concerning requirements for the process safety management of hazardous chemicals can be found on the OSHA Process Safety Management (PSM) website.
