Minority Business Annual Awards Presented at Luncheon

Wisconsin minorities will have more opportunities to secure start-up and expansion funds from a newly-announced Governor's initiative, "Get Started, Get Growing." Gov. Doyle announced the program during the 25th Annual Marketplace Governor's Conference on Minority Business which was held in Milwaukee on September 13. The new initiative will provide specialized opportunities to help minority entrepreneurs make the initial investment and then grow their business over time.
"Advancing opportunities for new businesses and helping entrepreneurs grow and succeed has been at the core of my Grow Wisconsin plan for our state," Governor Doyle said. "These new efforts will ensure that minority-owned businesses continue to prosper, helping Wisconsin compete at the high end."

Governor Doyle also highlighted the state's success on the Marquette Interchange Project – the largest transportation project in Wisconsin's history. Minorities have filled more than 20 percent of the construction hours on the project and Minority Business Enterprises (MBEs) construction and consultant firms will earn nearly $120 million by the project's completion.
Over 400 people attended the Marketplace luncheon to hear Gov. Doyle's remarks and to learn from the event's keynote speaker, Glenn Henderson, president of Atlanta-based AFC Worldwide Express, Inc. Henderson's message was: "Building Capacity: From David to Goliath" in which he addressed the following key points:
- The importance of minority business enterprises securing an advisory council (CPA, insurance agent, attorney, etc.) to assist with growing businesses
- The possibilities of joint ventures
- Reinvesting in one's business
- Diversifying one's business
- Giving back to one's community
