Gov. Doyle Announces $14.2 Million in Housing Grants
Governor Jim Doyle recently announced that 45 Wisconsin local governments and housing agencies will share more than $14.2 million in awards from the federal Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Small Cities program and the HOME Single-Family (HSF) program. Both programs are funded by the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and are administered by the Wisconsin Department of Commerce. "Expanding access to affordable housing not only helps meet the needs of our citizens, it encourages economic development," said Governor Doyle. "These grants will further our commitment to helping all Wisconsin residents have a decent, affordable place to live, while helping strengthen community infrastructure to support growth." HSF funds may be used to assist low- and moderate-income (LMI) households seeking to purchase their own homes through a combination of downpayment, closing and/or rehabilitation/construction costs. Funds may also be used to help (LMI) homeowners repair or replace their existing homes and in support of Habitat for Humanity projects. CDBG funds are used for various housing and neighborhood revitalization activities. Today's awards will be used to rehabilitate LMI owner- and renter-occupied units, including addressing lead-based paint hazards. The funds will also be used to assist LMI renter households with downpayment and closing costs to purchase a home.
