Bureau of
Housing Moves to Commerce
The Bureau of Housing, formerly located in the
Department of Administration, transferred to the Department of Commerce
on Sept. 2. The consolidation achieves efficiency by placing all
of Wisconsin’s Federal Community Development Block grant funds under
one agency. Approximately 25 positions will be part of the consolidation.
The two agencies have been meeting over the past few months to make
the move as seamless as possible for the employees and clients.
Commerce also held a welcome and get together for the new employees
on July 2.
More than $40 million is distributed annually by the Bureau to improve affordable housing opportunities for Wisconsin’s low-income residents. The Bureau administers federal housing funds such as the Home Investment Partnerships (HOME) and Community Development Block Grants (CDBG), as well as a variety of programs to assist homeless persons and individuals with special needs. It also provides state housing funds such as the Housing Cost Reduction Initiative (HCRI) and the Local Housing Organization Grant (LHOG) program. The Bureau also coordinates housing assistance programs with those of other state and local housing agencies, develops state housing policy, and provides housing information and technical assistance.
