On January 10, 2011, Department of Commerce Secretary Paul Jadin announced the appointment of David Volz as Executive Assistant to the Secretary.

From 2007-present, David Volz served as chief of staff for Sen. Alberta Darling, acting as her advisor in her role as a member of the Joint Finance Committee. He was also responsible for managing staff, directing the office, and promoting the senator's legislative initiatives. From 2003-07, he was research assistant for the senator, acting as liaison between her and her colleagues and state agencies, helping to advance legislative proposals, and providing comprehensive media and constituent services. Prior to that, he served various state elected officials since 1995. Volz has BA in Communication Arts from the UW-Madison.

The Department of Commerce has approximately 350 employees. It provides development assistance in areas such as marketing, business and community finance, exporting, small business advocacy, and manufacturing assessments.
