On January 10, 2011, Department of Commerce Secretary Paul Jadin announced the appointment of Mike Klonsinski as Deputy Secretary.

From 1997-present, Klonsinski served as executive director of the Wisconsin Manufacturing Extension Partnership (WMEP), which helps Wisconsin's small to midsize manufacturers become more competitive through continuous improvement, training, export assistance, supply chain management, and profitable sustainability. During his tenure, WMEP assisted more than 3,800 companies, helped create or retain at least 13,000 manufacturing jobs, and produced more than $1 billion in sales benefits and cost savings.

Prior to joining WMEP, Klonsinski served as director of the Texas Manufacturing Assistance Center, directed the Office of Advanced Technology in the Texas Department of Commerce, and held manufacturing management positions with Texas Instruments. He has a BS in Industrial Engineering from UW-Madison and an MBA from the University of Texas at Austin.

The Department of Commerce has approximately 350 employees. It provides development assistance in areas such as marketing, business and community finance, exporting, small business advocacy, and manufacturing assessments. The agency issues professional credentials for the construction trades and administers safety and building codes. It also regulates petroleum products and tank systems and administers the Petroleum Environmental Clean-up Fund.
