Reporting Air Pollution Emissions

Wisconsin Department of Natural Resource (DNR) requires that any business with air pollution emissions above certain levels report their total emissions at the end of each calendar year. The links below will provide some initial information to help you calculate your emissions and understand your reporting obligations, and then sends you on to the DNR's page with detailed instructions on how to complete the Annual Air Emissions Inventory report.

Each facility that has emissions greater than the thresholds in Table 1 of NR 438, Wisconsin Administrative Code, in a calendar year must report those emissions by March 1 of the following year. DNR's Air Program has changed their emissions inventory reporting to a completely online system for reporting 2006 emissions.

  • In ch. NR 438 Table 1, on page 1, lists each air pollutant that must be reported and the threshold that triggers the reporting requirement. For example, volatile organic compounds has a reporting level of 6,000 lbs per year and particulate matter has a reporting level of 10,000 lbs per year. Some hazardous air pollutants have very low reporting levels.

  • Calculations Worksheet for VOCs, HAPs, Particulate matter, and Fuel emissions An Excel spreadsheet with the basic formulas for calculating emissions is available to get you started. Save it to your hard drive as soon as the file opens.

If you have to report, go to DNR's Emissions Reporting page. Be sure and check out their training materials for the new reporting system.
