S&B POWTS Program Page

The Safety and Buildings Division Private Onsite Wastewater Treatment Systems (POWTS) program protects public health and the waters of the state by regulating onsite wastewater treatment and recycling systems, and by promoting the use of the best available technology to provide onsite sewage treatment system solutions for property owners.

NEWS

The Safety and Buildings Division is accepting public comment until December 30, 2009, on adoption of the ADS ICC Flowtech Mound Component Manual.  See announcement and copy of manual.

The map of the Wastewater Specialists districts has been updated to reflect the retirement of Wastewater Specialist Karl Schultz and supervisor Harold Stanlick.  Brad Johnson is the WWS supervisor.

Proposed changes to Comm 5.12, establishing a schedule of forfeitures for POWTS governmental unit employees, were adopted on Oct. 5, 2009, and will be effective Dec. 1, 2009.

- 6-Inch Soil Saturation Indicator Guide

* A technical bulletin issued by an ad hoc Wisconsin Society of Professional Soil Scientists committee is recognized by the Safety and Buildings Division as useful for soil and site evaluations. The guide helps determine if a Wisconsin soil is saturated within 6 inches of the ground surface, which is of importance in the placement of some private onsite wastewater treatment systems. 6" Indicator Guide V1.0 12-05 Link to WSPSS Site, PDF file, Word file

* The WSPSS guide references a National Resources Conservation System publication: "Indicators of Hydric Soils." http://soils.usda.gov/use/hydric/ That publication online does not include the preambulatory sections of Introduction, Concept, Cautions, Procedure, or Comment. (In Wisconsin, the region covered by glacial deposits is within LLR K and the driftless area in the southwestern portion is within LLR M.)
