S&B Electrical and Lighting Program

Safety and Buildings Division staff
provide
electrical
consultation
to owners, builders, inspectors, electricians, and designers.
Electrical inspections are made upon special request. Training is
offered.
Credentials are administered for
electricians and
electrical
inspectors. (There are municipalities in Wisconsin which have local
electrical credential regulations.) A person who holds a
electrical credential issued by S&B as an electrical
contractor, electrical contractor -
restricted, master electrician, journeyman
electrician, or beginning electrician
may perform electrical construction work in a Wisconsin municipality
which requires licensure. Whether
an electrical certification is required and what category of
certification is needed are determined by individual municipalities. |
NEWS
- There will be "Inspector Update" S&B / Inspector Association education sessions
presented beginning in January on commercial buildings, Uniform
Dwelling Code, and electrical topics. A flier will be mailed around
Thanksgiving to all inspectors eligible for continuing education

- Q&A on arc-fault interrupters and tamper-resistant receptacle rule changes January 1, 2010. See Electrical Q&A page.
- The Electrical Code Advisory Council met September 8, 2009, to review the proposed code drafts and the public
hearing comments relating to electrical inspection. See agenda and meeting summary. The council has been considering the first (Inspection) of two code development packages related to electrical inspection and credential regulations as directed by 2007 Wisconsin Act 63.
- Certified electrical contractors do not need the new Building
Contractor Registration PDF file.
Permanent
rules implementing Building Contractor
Registration were adopted August 3, 2009, and are
expected to be effective October 1, 2009. The
emergency rules are in effect until the last week of September.
Electrical businesses are affected.
