Governor Doyle Announces $2 million to Reduce Diesel Truck Emissions, Save Fuel
For Immediate Release: September 21, 2009 American Recovery and Reinvestment Funds Benefit Wisconsin MADISON - Governor Jim Doyle today announced that Wisconsin will receive $2 million in American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) Funding to reduce diesel emissions and save fuel. The Wisconsin Department of Commerce (Commerce) will administer the funds. The recipients of these grants will use the funding to purchase diesel truck idling devices, which will help to reduce fuel consumption and air pollution from heavy-duty diesel truck-tractor engines. "In Wisconsin, we are taking the lead to not only address environmental challenges, but also to find opportunities for innovation and growth," Gov. Doyle said. "Wisconsin will manage these funds to maximize both economic impact and emissions reductions." Building on the success of Commerce's Diesel Truck Idling Reduction Grant Program, the ARRA funds will help heavy-duty diesel truck owners purchase and install Environmental Protection Agency-verified idle-reduction technologies. The technologies include auxiliary power units and generator sets, battery air conditioning systems, thermal storage systems and fuel-operated heaters. Eligible recipients include common, contract and private motor carriers headquartered in Wisconsin that transport freight. Motor carriers are eligible for grants up to 50 percent of the cost to purchase and install idle reduction technologies on 1999 or newer long-haul diesel trucks. Applications are available at http://commerce.wi.gov/dieselgrantprogram. For more information on the program, contact Jean Beckwith, Commerce, at 608/261-2517, or jean.beckwith@wisconsin.gov. -30- |
