MADISON - Wisconsin Department of Commerce Secretary Jack L. Fischer, AIA, today submitted his letter of resignation to Governor Jim Doyle, effective Friday, July 18.

"When I left the private sector to become Commerce Secretary, I did so to serve the people and businesses of Wisconsin," Fischer said. "During my tenure, we advanced the economic interests of this state and helped it to be competitive and receptive to new business development while helping existing businesses to remain in Wisconsin and prosper."

Fischer adds, however, that "it has become increasingly difficult to carry out the mission of the Department, and I do not want to stand in the way of continuing progress; because of that, I am resigning."

The Wisconsin native, who became Commerce Secretary in November, plans to return to the private sector and is exploring several business opportunities.

Prior to being appointed to the Cabinet position, Fischer was president/CEO of The Fischer Group Companies, Fischer Investors Inc. and J.L. Fischer Inc. He was also the past president of JP-Marathon Inc. and president of Interglobia Development, a group of international design, planning, architectural, engineering and development companies.

"My background in the private sector was valuable in so many ways, as I felt I could relate to what business leaders were looking for as they investigated ways to expand their businesses and market share at home as well as worldwide," Fischer said.

Fischer also thanked those he has worked with to grow business and industry in Wisconsin. "It has been a privilege to work with the staff at the Commerce Department, Governor Doyle, the Cabinet and others in state government," Fischer added.
