MADISON - Department of Commerce (Commerce) Secretary Jack L. Fischer, A.I.A., today announced that Commerce has delegated Waukesha County an appointed agent to regulate erosion control, sediment control and storm water management for commercial buildings located in the Waukesha County area, except within those municipalities that have been delegated agent status by the Department of Commerce. Check the Safety & Buildings Division website to find out those municipalities that have delegated authority in Waukesha County. The website is the following: http://commerce.wi.gov/SB/SB-CommercialBuildingsDelegatedMunicipalities.html.

"Waukesha County joins more than 190 other state municipalities that have been delegated the authority to perform regulatory activities on behalf of Commerce," Fischer said. "Appointed agents have the responsibility to provide services on behalf of the state as well as their own enforcement activities on commercial buildings within the scope of their delegated authority."

Under agent delegation agreement, Alan Barrows will be responsible for regulating erosion and sediment control at public buildings and places of employment for Waukesha County.

Wisconsin Building Safety Network (WBSN)
Over the past year, Commerce has formed the Wisconsin Building Safety Network (WBSN) to help communities coordinate their community development, economic development, building regulation and fire department efforts into a cooperative and streamlined process that results in building projects getting completed faster, safer and at less cost. Working with an advisory group including officials from the League of Wisconsin. Municipalities, Wisconsin Towns Association, Wisconsin Fire Inspectors Association, UW-Madison, and the Wisconsin Counties Association, and many others, Commerce has scheduled a WBSN conference for September 24, 2008 in Pewaukee.

The focus of the conference will be threefold:

  1. Communicating the scope of the WBSN and its future potential in serving Wisconsin communities.
  2. Learning through case studies how several communities have implemented this program,
  3. Providing a forum for attendees to share their concerns, challenges and solutions with others in attendance.

Cost for the all-day conference is $95. The target audience for the conference is elected officials, municipal managers and fire department officials. Commerce will provide further details on the conference as they become available.

Municipalities seeking further information regarding the appointed agent program should contact Henry Kosaryzcki, Commerce, at 608/212-0138.
