Chinese Market for Clean Water
Water dropFor a number of years, water pollution has been a serious issue in China. According to a March 2009 research study released by China Research and Intelligence, over 70 percent of Chinese rivers, lakes and seashores are polluted as is 90 percent of underground water in urban areas. Purchases of bottled water were up 20 percent in 2008 compared to the previous year and the market amounted to more than 30 billion Yuan (4.3 billion USD).

Potable water safety in the rural areas will be addressed by some of the infrastructure projects that are part of the $585 billion economic stimulus plan unveiled by the Chinese government in November 2008.

The groundswell of public outrage over China’s rapidly decreasing water quality has also led to significant increases in sales of portable water testing kits.  China’s new “enviro-bloggers” are taking the clean-up efforts seriously and independently testing water in lakes, rivers and canals in unprecedented numbers.  China’s municipal, provincial and national environmental watchdogs are also looking for reliable portable tests to increase their reach and to be able to track the results of clean up efforts.
