Additional Wisconsin Connections in Mexico
Wisconsin companies interested in doing business in Mexico can find many opportunities and friends in the Mexican State of Jalisco.  Wisconsin and Jalisco signed a sister-state agreement in 1990, but the origins of the special relationship between the two states go back to the 1970s when University of Wisconsin scientists, who were searching for a lost link in the genetic chain of maize, were introduced to a student at the University of Guadalajara who was studying grasses in the Mantlán Mountains.  Subsequent scientific contacts led to more formal exchanges, particularly in dairy farming and grain production, which have long traditions in both states.  Wisconsin trade missions to Mexico led by the last three governors have included stops in Guadalajara, Jalisco’s capital.

Map of Mexico showing location of JaliscoJalisco has about 60 percent of the land area of Wisconsin, but is home to one million more people.  Like Wisconsin, Jalisco’s economy has strong agricultural, manufacturing, and tourism components.  Also similar to Wisconsin, is the state's position in the dairy industry. Jalisco is considered Mexico's' "dairy state" and produces more milk than any other state in the union.

Various departments within the Wisconsin government have continued to build strong relationships with business and educational institutions within Jalisco.  Most recently, the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP) led a delegation of Wisconsin companies to participate in a dairy trade show in Guadalajara. As a follow-up to this trade building event, DATCP is hosting four influential importers of agricultural products on a five-day buyers’ mission in Wisconsin, November 17 - 21. Accompanying the buyers will be Ms. Monica Sanchez, the Director of International Affairs for the Jalisco Governor's Office.  If you would like to meet with members of the Jalisco delegation or learn about other opportunities for food and agricultural products in Mexico, contact Ms. Jen Pino-Gallagher, DATCP Economic Development Consultant, jen.pinogallagher@wisconsin.gov, (608) 224-5125.
