Trade Mission to India in November
Governor Jim Doyle announced on May 13 that he will lead a trade
mission to India in November. The delegation will be composed of
Wisconsin firms that are seeking to sell products or services in the
Indian market. Economic development officials will also use the
mission to introduce Wisconsin to potential Indian investors. The
mission will depart Wisconsin on Wednesday, November 12 and return on
Saturday, November 22. The mission will travel to New Delhi,
Mumbai, and Bangalore, with the possible addition of Hyderabad.
Economic growth in India today is being rewritten by India’s
highly entrepreneurial and rapidly globalizing private sector. India is
investing in infrastructure projects, expanding its manufacturing
capabilities, and creating in new volume-based business models that tap
into rising incomes and consumption in towns and rural economies across
the country. Whether it is consumer goods and services, high technology
and industrial goods, healthcare, or infrastructure development, Indian
firms are bullish about the economy and are eager for U.S. capital
goods, commercial and joint venture partnerships, brands, services, and
know-how.
In 2007, U.S. exports to India surged 75 percent to an all-time high of
$17.6 billion. Advanced technologies, including aerospace,
specialized materials, information and communications technologies,
electronics and flexible manufacturing systems underpinned this growth.
Wisconsin’s exports to India have grown by 29 percent in the last
year. U.S. investments in India continued to expand in 2007, up 40% to
reach a cumulative $12.4 billion, while Indian investments in the U.S.
were up 62% to $3.2 billion. At this pace, it is possible that India
could become a top-ten market for U.S. goods and services beginning
next year and well into the future. In terms of long-range
economic forecasts, some major consultancies project that more than 400
million people, a full 40% of the population, will enter India’s
middle class over the next 15 to 20 years.
“This trade mission to India is an outstanding opportunity for
Wisconsin companies to meet the customers and business leaders that
will help them build their sales in these important markets,”
Governor Doyle said. “It's a good thing if a Wisconsin
company finds a strong partner in a rapidly growing country like India
and creates jobs in Wisconsin through exports.” To request
more information about the mission, contact Ms. Mary Regel, Director of
the Wisconsin Department of Commerce’s Bureau of Investment and
Export, mary.regel@wisconsin.com, (608) 266-1767.
