Kosovo Declares Its Independence
The province of Kosovo declared its independence from Serbia on Sunday, February 17, 2008. The United States recognized its independence the following day. The United Kingdom, Turkey, Italy, Germany, France, Australia, and Albania have also recognized Kosovar independence. Kosovo is the latest region of what was once Yugoslavia to seek independence. Other countries that once were part of Yugoslavia include Bosnia, Croatia, Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia, and Slovenia.

Kosovo has a population of approximately 2 million. Since June 1999 there have been nearly 17,000 NATO troops in Kosovo to prevent violence between Albanian and Serbian ethnic groups. Total U.S. assistance to Kosovo for 2008 is projected to be $335 million.
