International Business Education and Careers

Cartoon of students spinning a globe

There are several different fields within international business where people can find jobs today, including sales, marketing/advertising, shipping/logistics, banking/finance, accounting, legal, and education. Different jobs require different skill sets, but an ability to deal with people from other cultures who speak different languages is critical.

The University of Wisconsin System offers a variety of opportunities to develop international business skills. Visit the websites * of individual campuses to learn more about the programs they offer. Study abroad programs are good ways to become familiar with foreign business practices and attain fluency in another language. AIESEC * is an international organization that helps students obtain internships with businesses in other countries.

There are two excellent resources on the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus for both students and business people interested in international business:

Several of the campuses of the Wisconsin Technical College System * offer classes on various elements of the importing or exporting process. Waukesha County Technical College offers a two year Associates Degree program for Global Business Specialists *.

For people already in business, learning from your peers is a useful option. There are several business associations in Wisconsin devoted to international trade:

The International Credit Executives of Wisconsin (ICE) * offer a chance for business people responsible for fiscal issues to compares situations and practices in other countries.

It is never too early to include international elements in the learning process. The Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction * has information on the international aspect of K-12 education.

The State of Wisconsin has a very limited number of international-related positions.  Any openings would be posted at WISCJOBS, the official announcement site for all State of Wisconsin classified civil service positions.

The Wisconsin JobNet Center contains current job postings from employers in the public and private sectors.
