Underground Storage Tank Operator Training Outreach

The Energy Policy Act of 2005 requires the US Environmental Protection Agency, in coordination with states, to develop training guidelines for three distinct classes of individuals who operate and maintain federally-regulated underground storage tank systems (UST's). States receiving federal funding for regulating these systems must develop state-specific training requirements consistent with EPA's guidelines. The Environmental and Regulatory Services Division has promulgated new rules for this training, which became effective August 1, 2009, and the Division has begun to evaluate training programs for the three classes of operators.

The task at hand is to develop and provide outreach to the UST-operator community. The Division has produced a brochure to distribute to tank system operators explaining the requirements, responsibilities and training elements for each class of operator. The brochure and a question & answer page are available online. We are meeting with the Wisconsin Petroleum Marketers and Convenience Store Association to create a partnership to assist with delivering training opportunities to operators throughout the State.
