WI Basic Economic Development Course Offered Again this November in Madison

An interactive, basic economic development introductory course is being offered at the Pyle Center in Madison November 9-12. Organizers note that the course is especially beneficial for new professionals entering the field of economic development. It's also a great overview for municipal and county staff, elected officials, bankers, village and city administrators, and other individuals involved in economic development.

The course will be held at the Pyle Center located in Madison, Wisconsin beginning Monday afternoon, November 9, 2009, and run through Thursday, November 12, 2009. The cost is $650. This course is popular and fills quickly so early registration is recommended. For more information and to register go to www.uwex.edu/CES/cced/economies/bedc.cfm.

The main objective of the course is to provide a quality introduction to the field of economic development, including instruction in nine core competencies considered fundamental to the field. Sessions are offered on the following topics. Each topic is taught in an interactive manner and features small group exercises and projects to challenge participants:

  • Business Retention and Expansion
  • Managing an Economic Development Organization
  • Strategic Planning
  • Workforce Development
  • Economic Development Finance
  • Real Estate Development and Reuse
  • Community and Neighborhood Development
  • Small Business and Entrepreneurship
  • Attraction and Marketing

The course is sponsored by the UW-Extension Center for Community and Economic Development, the Wisconsin Economic Development Association (WEDA) and the International Economic Development Council (IEDC).

Other partners include the Wisconsin Bankers Association, the Wisconsin Technical College System, the Local Government Institute of Wisconsin, and the Wisconsin Department of Commerce and Department of Workforce Development.

The Wisconsin Basic Economic Development Course fulfills one of the introductory prerequisites for professional economic developers who wish to pursue the Certified Economic Developer (CEcD) designation through the International Economic Development Council (IEDC).
