Continuum of Care Grants Announced

Local homeless programs across America are benefiting from the award of Continuum of Care grants announced late last month by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. These awards include $6.8 million that will be shared by a variety of homeless provider agencies throughout Wisconsin. The funds, the highest level ever received under this competition, will support 37 projects. Separate HUD funding awards were also made to the Milwaukee, Madison and Racine areas. The funding offers transitional and permanent supportive housing to homeless individuals and families, helping them to move beyond the cycle of homelessness. In addition to providing permanent and transitional housing to homeless persons the grants support important services including job training, health care, mental health counseling, substance abuse treatment and child care. Last spring, under the leadership of Judy Wilcox, the state initiated and played a key coordinative role in the collaborative effort that brought these competitive funds to our state.
