Information Sessions to be Held on Financial Planning Assistance Through the Wisconsin Waterfront Initiative

MADISON - Communities interested in accessing planning funds for redeveloping their waterfronts should attend one of three information sessions identified below.

"Wisconsin's rivers, lakes and streams are among our greatest assets. Revitalizing our waterfronts helps build strong local economies by attracting new business, raising land values and drawing locals and tourists to a community," Governor Doyle said. "The Wisconsin Waterfront initiative will help communities protect and develop their waterfronts so they can be enjoyed by all for many years to come."

Under the Governor's Wisconsin Waterfront Initiative (WWI), communities that are seeking to redevelop their waterfronts may receive up to $25,000 planning assistance through the Wisconsin Department of Commerce (Commerce). The waterfront development plans that communities submit will receive a joint review from the state agencies participating in the WWI, including Commerce as lead agency; the Departments of Tourism, Natural Resources, Transportation and Administration; the Wisconsin Historical Society; and the Board of Commissioners of Public Lands. The joint review will provide a comprehensive state agency response designed to help the WWI applicant develop a coordinated strategy in implementing its proposed redevelopment.

Eligible applicants for WWI Planning Grants are limited to local units of government that will provide a cash match of at least 25 percent of the entire cost of the plan. Applications must be submitted no later than May 15, 2008. The application review process will take approximately 45 days.

Free information sessions will be held at the three locations identified below. All sites are wheelchair accessible. Advanced registration is required by April 4th. Email your intent to attend to COMMERCEWWI@wisconsin.gov.
